Duality

Marcus Cumberlege

My entire understanding
Of Buddhism is contained
In Namu Amida Butsu.
I utter these syllables
And carry on with my life.

The rest is calculation
And futile splitting of hair.
I feel good with nembutsu.
Why should I call in question
Shan-Tao, Honen and Shinran?

I am a finite being
With limited objectives.
I want to enjoy this day
Without help from alcohol
Or alcoholic thinking.

The poet goes for a walk.
The sky is blue. His sharp sword
Slices through self and non-self.
The universe bites its tusks.
His hairdresser does the rest.
