Hello, dear friend, most trusted, tried and true
Half man, half god, whose understanding eye
Knows who I am, and was, and shall be too
Better than I can say in poetry.
Hello again, I’m sorry if I’m late
With these my offerings of thanks and praise
And lack the fervour to communicate
With passion, or in more convincing ways.
Were I an animal, a fish, a bird
An unborn child, a flower or a tree
I’d demonstrate your truth without a word,
Using the tongue of sweet simplicity.
But ah! this world of complicated nets
On which your sunny wisdom never sets.
