Treasures we Found: What do you mean?

Nearing our 30th anniversary, this is the first bundle in a series Treasures we Found, with valuable documents we found during renovation works in our temple, worth showing our readers. Our founder Shitoku A. Peel has been active with Buddhism for several decades, a period in which he built numerous personal contacts with dharma friends in Belgium and abroad, and collected so many important documents.

The calligraphy Juseige (one of the hymns we chant during our weekly services) is painted by Motoyasu Kitagaki.
The comment is by Zuio H. Inagaki, a personal friend of Shitoku.

The text for Wesak 2500 is written by R.M. Kiere. He was the founder of the first real Buddhist movement in Belgium and of the quarterly Magga in 1956, a predecessor of Ekō.  In the 3rd edition of Magga, Shitoku writes his interpretation concerning Wesak 2500. To Shitoku he was a source of inspiration and an example. At his dead, in 1981, his picture was sent to us by his daughter.

As you can see, R.M. Kiere also studied Pali and Sanskrit: still another similarity with Shitoku? After all, our former temple priest used to run a translation bureau! Unintentionally, it reminds us of the 4th century in China, where, in all likelihood, the most important sources for Buddhist texts influenced each other in the same way during their many translation assignments.
