Upali - animated video for children

Op zolder vonden we ook nog een hele mooie animatievideo voor kinderen. Misschien gaan we die ooit nog dubben in het Nederlands…

Among the treasures, we found a very nice animated video for children. Perhaps, we could dub it into Dutch some time in the future…

How Upali became a monk

The animated, Buddhist children’s story “How Upali became a monk” is essentially the story of how the Buddha rejected the caste system of India during his lifetime and equally accepted people of any caste into the Sangha.

Upali is a young barber of the lowly Sudra caste who is, essentially, a slave. As he hears the Buddha is returning to Kapilavastu Palace, the Buddha’s former home, for the first time since he left it to gain enlightenment. Upali asks a merchant, “What is enlightenment?”, and is told that it is a rare and wonderous treasure which puts an end to all pain and suffering. Upali, who is badly treated, determines he is going to get some of this great treasure but is told by his superiors that slaves cannot become disciples the Buddha.

Through many twists and turns, some comical and some sad, Upali tries to find a way to become Lord Buddha’s disciple. Finally, Upali is able to go directly to the Buddha himself and is accepted as a monk disciple. The Buddha then uses Upali to expose the caste prejudices of some higher caste followers and to transform their prejudice into an awareness of the equality of all people in the Dharma.

This video animation was originally produced in Japanese by the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha. It was translated and dubbed into English by an all-volunteer caste of Seattle Buddhist Church and its White Lotus Media with some professional coaching and directing. Technical production was done by Okumo Studio in Seattle.
The video is recommended for children 7-12 years old.
